I am really happy with how the final piece turned out. When first starting out, I was trying so hard to follow the picture exactly, copying the same colors and everything. I ended up just frustrating myself by trying to be perfect so I finally allowed myself to loosen up. I really let myself experiment with this piece and because of that, it turned out much differently than I had originally envisioned, but I definitely think it was for the better.
One of my favorite aspects of this piece is the movement. I have never really let movement be a huge factor in any of my pieces, but I really think that in this piece, the eye travels throughout in a unique way, from the folded blanket, to the spiraling measuring tape, to the tilted curtain in the background. I barely even noticed that was what I was doing, but I think the composition is drastically improved because of the movement.
I also really like the color palette I chose for this piece. While it is similar to a lot of pieces I have completed before, I think it definitely speaks to my style as an artist. I also think that the repetition of the various colors was a huge success. Even though the colors were not evident in the photo, I definitely tried to bring back the blues into the folds of the blanket as well as into the background. I even added pops of the yellow into the background a little bit and into the dark, dark brown floors to tie everything together.
The most challenging part of completing this piece was probably creating the textural quality. I knew I wanted to apply the paints thickly, but controlling the application to make the precise texture was very challenging. I am happy with how the texture came out, although I do think that I could have darkened the shadows in the back textile to really emphasize the pattern. Overall though, I think this is a great piece to add to my portfolio, as it shows a lot of new techniques not seen in anything else I have done, along with my same artistic style.
