All of the art 4 students were paired with a mentee, an art one student, to practice being a mentor to. We have been helping them this semester, guiding them in their projects from building ideas to completing their projects. The past couple of weeks, we had the opportunity to work alongside of them and create a project together. We were assigned with a mixed media piece in order to help the younger students better understand what makes a good composition and color scheme.
My mentee is very creative and has great ideas, she is just pretty shy. For this project that I had the chance to guide her towards building her confidence as well. So, I decided to relinquish a lot of the control over to her. She really wanted a pastel color scheme which we went with, however, I guided her towards the importance of having some darker spots to provide contrast. She had never really done mixed media before, and I LOVE mixed media, so I was excited to be able to teach her a little bit. I think she learned a lot about mixed media, as well as skills that she will be able to carry into other projects such as composition, line variation, shape/size variation, color contrast, texture, and much more. She seemed to really enjoy the assignment and I enjoyed collaborating with her.
Overall, I like how the piece turned out, mainly because I can see certain parts and remember working on them with her. I think that the piece is successful as we incorporated many elements and we created a nice composition, however it is not really my style. I like more vibrant colors so sticking with this color scheme was hard for me. Also, I was trying to push even more layers, but she did not want to cover anything up ;) I really believe that layering is really important in a mixed media piece and I think this piece could have been taken a step further. Despite this, I am really proud of how far my mentee came while working as I do think she became more confident throughout the process.
