I will be honest, I was not excited for this project. Anything the slightest bit mechanical or grunge is not my style. I struggled for a long time to think of an idea that inspired me and really could not come up with anything. I had a list of random ideas including the idea of mechanical vegetables, which I had not put a lot of thought into, and when my art teacher saw it, she thought I should go for it.
I struggled a lot at the beginning to get the proportions right and to make it look like the viewer was looking down into the vegetable garden. I was also confused about how to get the mechanical pieces to curve in the shape of the tomato. I wanted to show depth with the various values of the metal while also showing the rounded effect of the vegetable. Once I figured out some of the harder parts, I really got into it. It was fun to get such deep colors and to figure out the color scheme. I am still practicing perfecting my craft with Prismacolor pencils but I was thankful for another opportunity to work with them
I think what is successful about this piece especially is the contrast of the smooth texture of the tomato and the hardness of the mechanical parts. I was worried that the piece would end up too busy between all the colors and the mechanical parts and the dirt patterns, but I think it all works well together. I also think the color scheme works really well because I repeated the colors throughout but in different ways such as the yellows in the squash and then again in the highlights of the tomatoes. I am glad that I was able to turn an assignment that I was not super thrilled about into something that I am proud of. It is cool to see how I took a weird topic and still made it true to my aesthetic. It has qualities that can be found in my other pieces but others that are unique to this drawing.
